about

PR040

Originally released on 2000

Mopho is a Brazilian psychedelic band formed in 1996, in the city of Maceió, Alagoas.

The band had its origins in 1989 in the city of Arapiraca, when João Paulo and Junior Bocão form a Beatles cover band.

In 1994, João Paulo moved to Maceió and formed the band Água Mineral and in 1996 they changed the name of the band to Mopho. The name comes from a continuous joke made by friends who, in the effervescence of the Manguebeat movement in Recife during the mid-90's, said that the band was going to "mold" in the rehearsal room because of the out-of-style music they were playing.

In 1997, João Paulo, Hélio Pisca and Alessandro Aru recorded the band's first demo tape entitled 'Uma Leitura Mineral Incrível' (An Incredible Mineral Reading), which was released only in K7 format and with a strong progressive/psychedelic sound. In 1998, after the departure of Alessandro Aru and the addition of Junior Bocão and Leonardo Luiz, the band recorded the second demo tape named 'Um Dia de Cada Vez' (One Day At A Time), this time on CD.

The eponymous album, was recorded in 1999 and released in 2000 by the São Paulo-based label Baratos Afins. This work was highly acclaimed by national critics and projected the band in important independent music festivals such as Abril Pro Rock, Porão do Rock, Balaio Brasil, Garanhuns Winter Festival. With the album, the band was featured in a TOP 35 by Californian radio KALX, from Berkeley, and drew several accolades such as ex-Mutantes Arnaldo Baptista, maestro Rogédio Duprat, even an American band Wondermints, who accompanied Brian Wilson , from The Beach Boys, on tour.

This album is considered to be one of the best albums of the 2000s released in Brazil by pretty much every Brazilian article written on the topic.
