PR031

While some works of art are born of elaborate and ambitious plans, others come into the world by pure chance.

For the holidays of 2017, Rafael Senra took advantage of a sunny day to play with his guitar. The mood was so relaxed that when he found a school ruler on his brother's desk, he ventured to use it on the guitar strings like a bow of a violin. He recorded a strange, instrumental theme, a far cry from the pop songs he used to record. Despite this, friends who heard his "joke" praised the result with enthusiasm.

From this initial attempt, Rafael ended up recording 12 songs in the same line, all of them instrumental. It was not long before he realized he had a whole album ready.

The result puts together a vast array of different influences, ranging from the Brazilian legendary movement 'Clube da Esquina', to artists like Brian Eno and Anthony Phillips, to the ethereal sound of the Cocteau Twins.

The concept of the album was born of the enigmatic sound produced by the "bow" in the guitar strings. It occurred to Rafael that the timbre reminded him of a woodworking machine - however, a melodic version of the machine.

From this idea, he came to the concept of the work: the twelve tracks of "The Mood Machine" are references to imaginary machines, artifacts that have no obvious practical utility. In fact, they would be "soul machines" (which is exactly the translation of "Seelischer Apparat", name of the fifth track, and alludes to a concept coined by Sigmund Freud at the end of the 19th century). The work inaugurates his stage name: Alfa Serenar.

When not composing and recording, the author also acts as writer and author of comics. Rafael is professor of Literature in the course of Letters of the Federal University of Amapá (Brazil).
